Broken Key Replacement — FAQ
Will I need a new lock?
Almost never. Extraction is non-destructive — once the fragment is out, the lock works normally with the new key. Replacement is only needed if the cylinder was already damaged before the key broke.
Can you cut a key from just the broken pieces?
Often, yes. If the pieces show the full bitting I can use them as a reference. If not, I decode the lock or pull the key code from the ECU instead.
Why do keys snap?
Almost always metal fatigue. Years of bending in your pocket plus a slightly stiff lock or worn ignition is all it takes. The fix is a freshly cut key, not muscle.
